Mkono kwa Mkono meaning “hand in hand” in Swahili, our official waste management program was inspired and created by our Australian volunteer Shelley in 2016, together with the help of some young villagers. The idea was to set up the infrastructure so local villagers could run the project autonomously and keep the local community of Chuini clean.

This local non-profit organization trained through the Lodge’s waste management from rubbish collection and separation of materials, to recycling and composting. They organised an education program for the primary and secondary school in Chuini to explain the importance of rubbish collection and hygiene, ended with a short movie and gathering for the village with games, raffle and comedy.
